North Holland: a province surrounded by water whose capital remains a mystery to part of the Netherlands. Some know it from its West Frisian folklore, the Skuumkoppe from Texel, or the Alkmaar cheese market, others from its long stretched coastal towns. Follow one of the cycling routes along the many characteristic villages, historical locations, centuries-old dykes, open landscapes, tulip fields, the Westfriese Omringdijk or visit one of the many windmills in West Friesland. The Kop van Noord-Holland area offers many surprising and beautiful cycling routes.
Walk through the town, in the dunes, along the beach or through the nature reserves of Schagen and its surroundings. For the real walkers, there is the Westfriese Omringdijk. This new regional path (150 km) along the iconic Omringdijk is one of the most beautiful walking routes in the Benelux and is part of Wandelnet. The regional footpath takes you alongside the water between Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Medemblik and over the dyke sections via Kolhorn, Schagen, Eenigenburg, Koedijk, Alkmaar and Ursem back to Hoorn. Fancy shopping in one of the most beautiful city centres in the Netherlands? Go out and shop till you drop in Schagen, the shopping mecca of North Holland. You can walk straight from our boutique Hotel Marktstad into the town centre. Discover the many shops on the Markt, Nieuwstraat, Gedempte Gracht, Molenstraat, Langestraat and more. Schagen is also an excellent place to shop when the weather is less clement. The covered Makado Centrum offers charming shops, free parking and is open 7 days a week. After shopping, you can of course settle down in our cosy Grand Cafe De Ooievaar. There, you can enjoy a well-deserved drink, a drink, lunch or dinner.
Within a 12-minute drive you’ll find yourself on one of the most beautiful beaches in North Holland, namely: Callantsoog. A lovely place to get a breath of fresh air or relax on the coast. Apart from Callantsoog, the beaches of Petten, Groote Keeten and Sint Maartenszee are also recommended for a visit. TIP: We rent out (a limited number of) electric bicycles on which you can quickly ride to the beach.
Discover nature during a beautiful walk or bike ride. Enjoy the blooming bulb fields, the hilly dune landscapes or the green forests that the area around Schagen has to offer. Besides walking or cycling, it is also possible to discover Schagen and the surrounding area of West Friesland by boat. Take a canoe, sailboat or motor canoe and sail through polders that are rich in flora and fauna. There is plenty to experience in the natural areas around Hotel Marktstad. Historic buildings characterize the town of Schagen. A friendly town on the west side of the Westfriese Omringdijk. Schagen is known for its rich culture with the Westfriese Folklore, the Schager Slot and the famous annual cattle market during Easter In Schagen, the culture lover can also visit the Vreeburg carriage museum or the Schagen car museum. Exercise makes you healthier and happier. Besides sports activities, such as walking and cycling in the nature and dune areas of Schagen and surroundings, it is also possible to exercise on one of the many beaches. Take kitesurfing lessons on the beach or go for a guided swim in the open sea.
